We're finding, buying & framing records all day. Every once in a while we pause for thought.
Forty years ago last Sunday, Rod Stewart kept the Number One spot in the UK charts for a fourth week with I Don’t
Want to Talk About It / First Cut Is the Deepest.
This was the week when, famously, it was the only record that stood between God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols and the Number One spot in the week of the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
God Save the Queen actually entered the charts the week before at Number 11 and, as intended, fuelled outrage, a great deal of publicity for the band and conspiracy theories that live on to this day to the effect that the charts were rigged
to avoid embarrassment for the Royal Family.
Rod collected his knighthood last year. Johnny, Glen, Steve and Paul are still waiting for theirs.
God Save the Queen is a great song which had a huge long term impact, but now the dust has settled we would say that First Cut
Is the Deepest, a Cat Stevens song, is by far the better tune and is right up there with Tom Traubert's Blues as Sir Rodney's finest moment.
We framed both records for customers recently:
